The name is actually a mispronunciation of Black House, a grand old house that once stood near St James Street. Blackhorse Lane has some exciting stuff going on, not least of which is the Blackhorse Workshop. This is a community making space where you can attend woodwork, metalwork and leather work classes. They also host a variety of special events. It is also home to the incredible Wood Street Coffee, who have one of the best brunch menus going. A bit closer to the station is Gnome House, a community centre that is also home to Inky Cuttlefish screen printers. Yasar’s Place is good for kebabs, and Forest Wines just around the corner is a great spot to pick up craft ale and good quality wine. From Blackhorse Lane you can also access the glorious Lea Valley Marshes, which in turn lead to the Walthamstow Wetlands, 211 hectares of open space and reservoirs – the largest urban wetlands nature reserve in Europe. Get lost in the excitement, or lose yourself on the wetlands, the choice is yours.
